secret boards on pinterest!!!

while the weekend was already off to a great start, it got even better saturday morning when i had an email from pinterest announcing the launch of secret boards. i was home alone, but i’m pretty sure i let out a big “ohhhh, hell yeah!” with excitement.

i’ve been waiting for this option since i joined the site in early 2011. i can’t tell you how many times i refrain from pinning something in hopes to keep a find just mine for a little while. when planning my wedding, i even resorted to browser bookmarking (i know, soooo old fashioned). though i did have a semi-secret board called “love”, but eventually people caught on and the jig was up.

while the feature is still in “testing” mode, each pinner gets 3 secret boards – perfect for curating your christmas list, planning an upcoming event or simply for hiding those extra special finds you aren’t yet ready to share with the world.

book page paper hearts

paper hearts made from pages of a used book

well, my friends, i realize that it’s been nearly 3 months since i tied the knot and i’ve yet to share any real projects or photos with you all. my apologies!

let’s kick it off with this one… paper hearts made from the pages of a used book.

our wedding combined elements of vintage + rustic – and among other random things, travel + library decor. to play up the library theme we incorporated a lot of books, accessories + diy. i experimented a bit with various paper projects, but finally settled on this little gem. it’s super easy and they look pretty cute. my mom and i made around 100 of these one evening (over wine + tv).  while you can easily string the hearts to make garland, we opted to scatter them around in some wire baskets. (see below for a photo of the hearts in use at our wedding!)

what you’ll need: an old book, scissors, a stapler

how to create your hearts:
1) rip the pages from the book
2) cut each page into 1 inch strips
3) take 4 strips of the paper, stack them on top of each other and staple them together at one end
4) take the other ends, holding 2 with one hand and 2 with the other
5) bend them backwards to form a heart shape touching the loose ends to the stapled end
6) pull the inside strips down a bit to create a smaller heart inside the bigger one
7) cut off any excess paper
8) staple the loose ends to the already stapled end
9) … and the hearts are ready for display!

wedding bells.

well well well… it might appear that i’ve been less than crafty the past few months – though actually it’s quite the opposite. while i admit i’ve been less than a stellar blogger, i’ve been keeping busy planning an array of projects. as of today, i’m just 3 weeks out from my biggest craft project of all…  my wedding!

in a few days i’ll head back to the US in preparation for the big day. my mother’s closets are overflowing with etsy, ebay and thrift store purchases. you see, our wedding is a handmade affair.

a sustainable engagement ring from utopian creations, wedding invitations made by shopbellsandwhistles, a custom dress designed by ktjean, decor from thelonelyheart and ElizabethSt (among many others), photobooth props from WhiskerWorks and the list goes on and on… these touches mixed with vintage mason jars, wooden fruit crates, farm fresh flowers, locally sourced eats by antique kitchen and a bar full of craft beer – all will help make this day something that truly represents who we are through a million personal little touches.

so00000 – though i’ve been quiet, please know that i’m keeping busy and in a few weeks i’ll have lots of crafty goodness to share!
