o.p.p. – decorative tape

in the past few years, i’ve become really infatuated with giving a really pretty gift. rather than expensive gift wrap and impersonal cards, i do this with kraft paper and recycled tags, markers & more. in fact, my key wrapping components for christmas were these cute little tags made out of recycled books & buttons.

with that… when i saw this great idea for unique & handmade tape it got me pretty darn excited.  not only is the tape a perfect wrapping component for any handmade lover, but the wooden thread spools make this a great accessory for your craft room or a gift for a handy friend.

o.p.p. – braided bead bracelet

i’m in the need of a little fashion revive. with my obsession of pinterest at an all-time high and a u.s. trip planned for next week (clothing & accessories are much less than in oz), i’ve been on a rampage pinning & online shopping.

re: fashion – i used to be a bit accessories obsessed.  I still have 2 large treasure chests filled w/ necklaces, bracelets, rings & earrings – some nice, some cheap (aka – forever 21) and some handmade by me and other etsy artisans. these days i tend to wear a necklace & my swatch watch nearly every day… however, i’ve been recently thinking that i need to get a couple new pieces of bling for my wrists (i’ve retired my famous brass snake bracelet… for now.) with that comes today’s project…

these beaded + braided bracelets are ‘too cute’, easy & just my style (they also come from a great website for diy).

etsy has entered the building…

last week i got an email from etsy.  however, it wasn’t one updating me with the latest features nor was it a payment invoice – but rather a warm and welcome ‘hello’ from a new addition to the etsy family. australia a small country (in pop.) that embraces a HUGE amount of handmade has been representative-less on the etsy staffer front – until now… enter kirsteene phelen, etsy’s 1st aussie employee! kirsteene has taken on the task of curating a community of etsy sellers and shoppers around the land of oz.  just a couple months into the job – she’s hit the road and is doing a bit of a whistlestop tour meeting australia’s etsians.

last night – in town for adelaide’s own bowerbird bazaar, kirsteene got a group of etsy sellers (+ some) from around town together for a meet & greet and some drinks.  as still somewhat of a newbie here, this was a great opportunity to meet other like-minded peeps + discover a few gems out there.

the attendees included the likes of the below…

collect magazine (a perfect pint-sized print mag that spotlights interesting products, people, places & things around adelaide + the globe – i’ve been a reader for a few months now – love it)

presence (a unique shop in adelaide stocking an assortment of products ranging from handmade pieces to vintage polaroid cameras + you can even rent a vintage typewriter for the week…. curation to the peak)

fede textiles & designs (handcrafted toys including soft cushion hammers, utensils and more… the stuff is seriously too cute)

…and a few others which i hope to share with you in the future.  i’ve raised my hand to being down for a more regular meet-up.

etsians unite.

say it with a signature

one of my great friends is a blogger too.  paige is witty, real and for the past couple of years has been sharing the journey of her life over at barefoot & vintage. this past year, paige’s world got a whole lot more exciting when she reconnected with the love of her life + found out she had a bun in the oven (baby zoey is due in just 1 week!) + got married… all this documented over at bf&v.

while i urge you to check out her lovely little blog – that is not the reason for this post.  instead, i want to share something that my dear old friend uses to sign off from each entry… a fun little find that i think all you crafty communicators would enjoy.

let me introduce ‘mylivesignature’.

whether you want to use the wizard or scan your actual handwritten moniker… this fun little tool can turn your name (or any word) into an image/HTML.

put. a. bird. on. it. – take 2.

earlier this year, i (along with thousands of other crafty fans) found obsession in a 101 second phenomenon called ‘put a bird on it’.  the title was that of a segment from season 1, episode 2 of IFC’s ‘portlandia’. SNL castmember fred armisen & indie rocker carrie brownstein created + star in this sketch comedy series that takes place in portland, oregon and focuses on the eccentric nature of the city and its people.

the show itself is a winner, but ‘put a bird on it’ takes the cake by calling out the fact that birds seem to be a new staple in design. the thought: if you put a bird on it, it will instantly become interesting and purchase worthy.  people love birds… right?!

the sketch which IFC posted on youtube has now had over 700,000 views… with people all over the world relating to the ‘put a bird on it’ bandwagon.  i was in melbourne this past may, when i noticed that the famous shop ‘meet me at mike’s’ on brunswick st. even had a ‘paboi’ window display!

longing for some more bird action, i stumbled on over to www.putabirdonit.com recently and found that you can now put a bird on virtually anything across the web! simply use their ‘go put a bird on something’ tool to spruce anything up!

check out below where i stuck a bird on a retro tourism van that i snapped a photo of while visiting santa fe, new mexico a couple of years ago.  this beauty of a vehicle paired with a bright orange bird relaxing over top = art.

have fun.
